For almost 2,000 years, Britannia has captured the spirit of the nation she represents. She has evolved through time, reimagined by artists to reflect different strengths and characteristics of Britain. When sculptor Philip Nathan created his interpretation of Britannia for a new bullion coin in 1987, he chose elements such as the trident and olive branch to symbolise her maritime connections and peaceful spirit.
Philip Nathan’s design has become a modern classic, winning awards and redefining security in the bullion market with the addition of four groundbreaking features. Surface animation provides a background for Britannia, reflecting the flow of waves as the coin is moved, and between this and the banding of the coin you will find micro-text with the wording ‘DECUS ET TUTAMEN’, which translates as ‘An ornament and a safeguard’ and describes the features that both decorate and protect the coin. A latent feature in the lower-hand segment of the coin switches between a trident and a padlock based on the viewer’s perspective, emphasising her naval strength and the coin’s secure nature. Tincture lines also carefully highlight details such as the Union flag on Britannia’s shield. Together, these advanced features have combined to create a stunning Britannia design that makes this coin one of the most visually secure in the world.
