1975 Yamaha RD400 - A Classic Two-Stroke Legend
The 1975 Yamaha RD400 is a remarkable evolution from its predecessor, the RD350, featuring a 399cc air-cooled, two-stroke engine that delivers an impressive 40 horsepower at 7000 RPM. Renowned as the "Alpha Wolf" of the late 70s, this early model, produced in October 1975, remains in excellent condition.
Unique to the RD400 is its oil injection system, which uses an oil tank and pump to deliver oil directly based on throttle position, eliminating the need for pre-mixed fuel. The standard model came with wire wheels and a drum rear brake, while an optional upgrade included cast wheels with disc brakes both front and rear.
This matching numbers RD400 has undergone a sympathetic restoration. The frame and wheels have been powder-coated, with the wheels finished in a custom choice. The blue paint has been matched to bikes of the same vintage for authenticity. The full engine rebuild included sourcing the correct carburettors from the USA. The exhaust and downpipes have been rechromed, and the bike is fitted with new Avon Road Rider tires. Although the seat, mudguard, and indicators are aftermarket, there’s still room for personal touches or simply enjoying a reliable classic.
