2 years ago, Ally Onion, won a KTM 1290 adventure from us. He wasn't available to take delivery so his son William Onion took delivery instead, and send us in a brilliant photo which you might remember. Him standing on a stool next to the KTM, as the bike was so big!
Fast forward to Jan 2024, and we got a message from Ally (Williams Dad) to tell us to of the terrible news that his son, Mountaineering enthusiast William Onion, 33, who served in Afghanistan before becoming a fitness trainer, had tragically fallen to his death while climbing Crib Goch. The accident occurred at around 11am on November 11 last year – Armistice Day.
Born in Belfast, Mr Onion joined the Royal Signals and went onto serve in Afghanistan.
An experienced hiker, after leaving the Army he settled in Bournemouth and worked as a fitness trainer, nicknamed 'Coach Pickles', leading trips to his beloved mountains.
Following the accident, a 999 call was made, and the Mountain Rescue Team were urgently deployed. A helicopter was sent for immediate attendance to William, and a foot team to make their way along the ridge to rescue and support the remaining five of the group. They used all of their resources to escort the group to the safety vehicles on standby. This was all whilst the group were coming to terms with the accident that had happened in front of them. Both land and air rescue support were very professional, reassuring and efficient throughout the entire day, ensuring safety and supporting the group, all while they carried out their rescue.
The rescue consisted of two helicopters, two Land Rovers, foot teams, a medical team and the numerous support personnel. The team are all voluntary. They work 24/7, 365 days a year to ensure there is a team on standby, should people need help in the mountains. During 2023 alone, the rescue team attended 308 callouts, with 7 of these happening simultaneously within a 24-hour period.
Following the tragedy, Mr Onion's father said: 'He passed at 11am on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, a soldier through and through, a son that no man could have been prouder of.
'He was happy, loved and someone that whoever met him, thought the world of him.'
