Raising £11,826 in Memory of William Onion: A Tribute to a True Adventurer

In 2022, Ally Onion won a KTM 1290 Adventure from us. As Ally was unavailable to take delivery, his son, William, stepped in to receive the prize. You might remember the brilliant photo he sent us—standing on a stool next to the towering KTM.

Fast forward to January 2024, and we received heartbreaking news from Ally. His son, William Onion, a passionate mountaineering enthusiast and former soldier, tragically lost his life while climbing Crib Goch. The accident occurred on November 11, 2023, Armistice Day, at around 11am.

William, born in Belfast, served in the Royal Signals and was deployed to Afghanistan. After leaving the Army, he settled in Bournemouth and pursued a career as a fitness trainer. Affectionately known as "Coach Pickles," he led many expeditions to his beloved mountains and inspired countless individuals with his dedication and love for the outdoors.

On that fateful day, a 999 call was made following the accident, prompting an urgent response from the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team. Their efforts were swift and professional, deploying two helicopters, two Land Rovers, foot teams, and a medical team to assist William's group. The rescue team worked tirelessly to ensure the remaining five climbers were safely escorted to the awaiting support vehicles while providing reassurance and comfort in the face of unimaginable grief. Llanberis Mountain Rescue is a volunteer organisation that operates 24/7, 365 days a year, responding to over 300 callouts in 2023 alone.

Following the tragedy, Ally shared these touching words about his son: "He passed at 11am on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, a soldier through and through, a son that no man could have been prouder of. He was happy, loved, and someone that whoever met him, thought the world of him."

In memory of William, Ally was dedicated to raising funds for Llanberis Mountain Rescue, recognising their incredible support and the crucial role they played in helping his family during their darkest time. To support Ally's efforts, we launched a special competition to raise funds for the rescue team. We put up £2,000 in prizes, with every penny from the competition going directly to the fundraiser.

Thanks to your generosity and support, together we raised an amazing £11,826! This incredible achievement wouldn’t have been possible without you—our valued supporters. Your contributions will help ensure that Llanberis Mountain Rescue can continue their life-saving work, providing aid to those in need and maintaining their readiness for future emergencies.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who took part and supported this cause. Your kindness and generosity have made a real difference, and together, we have honoured William Onion's legacy by supporting a cause that was close to his heart.
